Werewolves and Vampires?

While attending Boo at the Zoo over the weekend, we looked for “spooky” animals.  Werewolves?  Vampires?  Unfortunately, we didn’t find anything truly frightening at the Oakland Zoo, but did see this gorgeous hyena (I bet he’d get pretty scary if anyone tried to take that bone away from him!!) and a bunch of cute bats

Perhaps the scariest thing of all was this giant ant art…

  1. The hyena is adorable…as long as he’s in his zoo home! 🙂

Isn’t he cute? In the past, the hyenas at the Oakland Zoo have been hard to spot, as the two (elderly) were usually hidden in their sleeping areas. Now they have two new five-year-olds who are more active and frisky. This one has such a gorgeous coat of fur!

The bats were my favorites, too. I was reading that our local zoo has trained its bats to show off their wings on command. They get treats for doing so (fruit!) and it allows the handlers to inspect them for health problems. It also helps the bats to learn how to cooperate with the medical staff if they do have to have to be treated for some ailment.

I admit I would have been spooked if that “big” bat came too close.

The bats (flying foxes) are large, but they look like cats with wings. So cute!
