While my husband was warming up for his bike race on Saturday (see post here… Cyclo-Cross, Monterey Style), my son recommended we follow one of the nearby trails and go bug hunting. Excellent idea! We keep exploration tools (bug viewer, magnifying glass) with us at all times, so we’re ready to go whenever inspiration strikes.

That’s an excellent pastime! When my kids were small we camped a lot in the forests of northern Arizona and a favorite pastime was “heffalump hunting”, a “heffalump being defined as anything that lived beneath down trees, big pieces of bark or other wood, stones, hollow logs, etc.

Fun! My son loves to do what you call “heffalump hunting”, to look for salamanders, millipedes, and such. I’m glad a naturalist taught him to overturn the rocks and logs away from him (life the rock towards him, so the underneath area is away from him), so, just in case there’s a rattlesnake under there, it’ll run away from him, not towards him. Something I wouldn’t have thought of!

I love this – brings back happy memories for me. My son in particular just LOVED bugs – it would take us ages to get anywhere because he had to stop to examine every ant and spider! Thank you for ‘liking’ my post today.
