Black and White Striped Beetle

Check out this insect we saw on Thursday while walking on the Kule Loklo Trail in Point Reyes.  Anyone know what it is?

Nick Turner identified it correctly… it’s a Banded Alder Borer. It’s a beautiful beetle! 🙂

I actually love black and white photography, but will never attempt it. I worked at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Pebble Beach while in grad school. After studying the masters and being surrounded by their work (actually able to hold the photographs!), I’m humbled. But a color photograph of a black and white beetle? I’ll try!

Is it perhaps a Rosalia funebris? The Banded Alder Borer

  4. What a neat looking beetle! It’s so great, what we get to see, by walking when we can rather than driving. I went walking at 6am this morning, and saw beautiful white Egrets at the edge of a pond, so quiet. Wish I had a pic to share

I love Egrets! Beautiful birds. And walking early in the morning is the best. So quiet and peaceful, compared with the rest of the day.

Yes, all dressed up and nowhere to go! I wonder what the stripes do for the beetle. We found it hanging out on the green plants, so I don’t think it’s camouflage. Fascinating insect. Beautiful.

Love the beetle. Definitely a color combo I haven’t seen before on a beetle. Great shot.

It was new to me! You can’t tell by the photo, but it’s pretty big, too. Maybe 2 inches long?
