Butterflies, California Academy of Sciences

On Monday, my son and I enjoyed a fun visit to the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.  It was our last outing before his first day of school.  I think the highlight of this visit was the baby ostriches!  So many, and so cute!!   My son also wanted to go into the Earthquake Exhibit again (something he said he NEVER wanted to do again after a previous visit… see post here, Earthquake!  And more… California Academy of Sciences).  He didn’t find it nearly as frightening this time.  Maybe the experience will help us when a real earthquake occurs!

As always, however, the Rainforests of the World exhibit was amazing.  The butterflies are truly magical.  If you haven’t experienced this, you have to go.  I wasn’t able to capture a photo of the most beautiful butterfly of all, the large Blue Morpho.  Well, actually, the first photo (the brown one), is a Blue Morpho, but with its wings folded up, you can’t see the brilliant blue.

Nice photos as always and the Blue Morpho makes me think of the movie “The Blue Butterfly”.

I hadn’t heard of that movie, so I had to look up what it’s about. Looks wonderful! Do you recommend watching it?

I think it’s a fantastic movie (and my kids really liked it too). It’s basically about a kid who is dying and wants to see (or catch–it’s been a while..) a Blue Morpho in person in the wild. In addition to an interesting story, there are amazing nature scenes with some amazing bugs etc.. I think my youngest was in 4th grade when she saw it and she really liked it.

Thanks! I’ll check it out. Probably with my husband after our son is asleep. He’s going through a fear-of-dying phase… not a good time to watch a movie about a boy with cancer.

Wonderful butterfly images. The butterflies have been out in force in UK. I think I should get a few more photographs of them before the cold sets in.

It’s been nearly 2 years since I’ve beento the academy of sciences but I hope to return soon. The pics of the butterflies remind me of a wonderful experience I had while visiting a botanical garden in Okinawa, Japan. They’re beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

    God Bless,
